What the replica misses

Case thickness. Many replicas run 0.3 mm to 0.8 mm thicker than the genuine 13.2 mm. The caseback sits higher on the wrist. Other gaps: date font, lume color, anti-reflective coating, center link polish, rotor engraving.

No replica uses a true three-level co-axial escapement. George Daniels designed the Co-Axial escapement and Omega adopted it in 1999. Replicas show a bridge shaped to look like the co-axial assembly. The escapement underneath is a standard lever.

The genuine 8900 runs a silicon balance spring. Replicas use steel or alloy springs. Magnetic resistance in a replica sits far below 15,000 gauss.

Movement types in replicas

  5. Check bracelet construction: screws or pins. Measure taper from 20 mm to 18 mm.
  6. Pressure test the case at a local shop. Cost runs $30 to $60.
  7. Compare caseback engraving and reference stamps.

Legal position

In the US, 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. Penalties reach 10 years in prison for a first offense. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments. A seller must not describe a replica as genuine. Buying a replica for personal use is a different case from selling one, but seizure at import remains a risk.
