The short answer

A replica IW329045 lives or dies on one part: the internal rotating bezel. The real Aquatimer hides its dive scale under the crystal and drives it with a second crown at 2 o'clock. If the copy you are looking at has a printed ring, a glued-on insert, or a crown that just spins without moving anything, you are paying for a costume. Walk away. Everything else on a rep can be tolerated, fixed, or upgraded. That mechanism cannot be faked cheaply, and factories that skip it skip the rest too.

What the real watch is

The IW329045 belongs to the IWC Aquatimer Automatic family, a 42 mm dive watch. Stainless steel case, roughly 14 mm thick, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and a 300 meter rating. The movement is IWC caliber 30120, built on a Sellita SW300-1 base, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with about 42 hours of reserve.

The party trick is IWC's SafeDive system. The outer ring and the inner scale are coupled, so the two move together and travel counterclockwise only. That design prevents a bump from adding time to your dive. It also, conveniently for us, makes the bezel the single hardest thing to replicate at a low price.

Check the exact variant before you order. IWC has run several dial colors, strap options, and a titanium sibling under similar numbers, and sellers mix the names freely.

Why this reference is a hard copy

Three things separate a decent Aquatimer rep from a bad one.

  • The bezel mechanism. A working version needs a gear track, a coupling, and a gasket stack under the crystal. That is real tooling. Most budget factories fake it.
  • The quick-change strap system. Genuine IWCs let you swap rubber for bracelet without tools. Copies often use standard spring bars with a decorative cap, which pop off or refuse to seat.
  • Case finishing. The Aquatimer mixes brushed surfaces with polished bevels along the lugs. Cheap reps sand everything flat and lose the sharp edges that catch light.

Movement tiers you will run into

  • Under $150. Usually quartz or a rough automatic. No functional inner bezel. Treat it as a fashion watch.
  • Roughly $250 to $450. Miyota 9015, Seagull ST2130, or a decorated clone. Decent timekeeping, thin caseback, hit-or-miss date alignment.
  • Roughly $450 to $800. Better cases, closer lug geometry, sometimes an SW300-based movement with a proper deco rotor. This is where the bezel usually works.

Ask which movement is inside, then ask for a video of the bezel turning. Sellers who send one without prompting tend to be the ones worth dealing with.

What to inspect before you pay

  1. Turn the 2 o'clock crown and watch the inner scale. It should move smoothly, counterclockwise only, and line up with the outer ring.
  2. Check the crown action. Gritty or wobbly means stripped threads waiting to happen.
  3. Look at the date window at 3. A cheap rep sets the date too high or too low in the aperture, or uses a font that is too bold.
  4. Charge the lume with a phone light. Aquatimer reps often use weak paint that fades in ten minutes.
  5. Check the crystal edges for a milky AR tint. Blue or purple haze on a diver looks wrong.

Water resistance, honestly

Assume nothing. Even a rep advertised at 300 meters has unknown gaskets, unknown torque on the caseback, and no factory pressure test. Wear it in the shower if you like. Do not dive with it, and do not swim in the ocean until a local watchmaker pressure tests it and swaps the seals. That service costs less than a ruined movement.

Strap and hardware notes

The rubber strap on good reps is soft and matches the case tone. Bad ones smell like a tire fire and stiffen within weeks. If the quick-release system does not work, budget for a replacement strap with standard spring bars. Also check that the buckle tang sits square, because a crooked buckle will chew the strap in a month.

Questions to ask any seller

  • Which movement is inside, and is it the one in the photos?
  • Does the inner bezel rotate with the crown at 2, or is it fixed?
  • Can you send a short video of the bezel and the date change?
  • What is the return policy if the bezel is dead on arrival?

Bottom line

A replica IW329045 is worth owning when the bezel works, the case has crisp edges, and the movement is a known quantity. If any of those three is missing, save your money. The Aquatimer is a tool watch, and a tool that cannot do its job is just jewelry with a diver's dial.
