The short answer

A replica IW329002 lives or dies on three numbers: a 40mm case, roughly 11mm thick, with a movement thin enough to keep that profile. If a listing lists 12.5mm or more, it is a 2824-2 build wearing a slim watch's clothes. That one measurement tells you more than ten glamour photos of the clasp.

What the real IW329002 is

This reference is the IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII in stainless steel with the black dial, the version most people picture when they say IW329002. Steel case, 40mm across, about 11mm thick, 20mm lug width, roughly 51mm lug to lug, 60m water resistance, a soft-iron inner case for magnetic protection, and caliber 35111 sitting on a Sellita SW300-1 base. Printed numerals, no applied indices, date at 3 o'clock on a black disc with white text.

That plainness is the problem for anyone copying it. There is nowhere to hide a shortcut.

Case and crystal

I look at the side profile before anything else. The original is a slim, straight-sided case with a slight taper toward the caseback, and the crown sits close to the midcase. Budget builds run a fatter midcase because the movement inside is thicker. On the wrist that reads bulky, and the bracelet end links stop sitting flush against the lugs.

Then the crystal. The genuine sapphire carries anti-reflective coating on both faces, so the dial goes nearly black at an angle. Copies often show a blue or purple sheen, or coating on the top only. A phone flash exposes this in one shot.

  • Case: 40mm wide, about 11mm thick, 20mm lugs
  • Crystal: sapphire, anti-reflective coating both sides
  • Crown: conical, signed, correct diameter
  • Caseback: properly engraved, not a printed sticker

Dial details that give it away

The date disc matters. The original uses a slim typeface on a matte black wheel. A white date wheel or a glossy one is an instant tell, and so is a wheel that sits high or low in the window.

Check the triangle at 12. The two dots should be crisp and the triangle filled to its edges. Lume should glow an even green. Blotchy or pale lume shows up on the lower tiers within seconds of a dark room test.

Hands: the sword hands should be flat, well finished, and reach the minute track. A short hand or a burred seconds hand is obvious in macro shots, which is why sellers avoid them.

Printing: IWC and SCHAFFHAUSEN should be sharp. Soft or fuzzy lettering means pad printing done badly.

Movement tiers you will see

  1. Miyota 9015, decorated. Thin at 3.9mm, smooth sweep, easy for any watchmaker to service. Best match for the slim case.
  2. 2892-A2 clone. Also thin and closer to the SW300 in architecture, but finishing varies by factory.
  3. 2824-2 clone. Reliable and cheap, but 4.6mm thick, which is why those builds sit tall.

Ask which movement is inside. A seller who cannot answer that question is not one I would send money to.

Bracelet versus strap

The five-link steel bracelet is where cheap builds fall apart. Look for solid end links with no gap at the case, a firm click on the clasp, and removable links that are actually screwed or pinned, not friction fit. Strap versions ship with stiff leather that looks wrong next to the original grain, so budget for a replacement if you go that route.

Rough price bands

Under $100 you get a 2824-2 or DG2813 inside a fat case with a hollow bracelet. Between $150 and $250 the case gets closer and a Miyota becomes common. Above $300 you are paying for the top factory runs with correct thickness, clean dial printing, and real bracelet finishing. More money does not guarantee more watch, so compare QC photos across tiers before deciding.

QC photos worth zooming into

  • Side profile next to a ruler or caliper
  • Date window at 3, wheel centered
  • Crown height and crown guard shape
  • Lug gap with the bracelet mounted
  • Lume shot in a dark room

Summing up

The IW329002 is a simple watch, and simple watches expose bad copies. Get the thickness right, get the crystal coating right, get the date disc right, and everything else follows. When a listing hides the side profile or shows only angled shots, that is your answer.
