Short answer
In most listings, 18k on a replica Cartier Santos means a gold layer over steel or brass. It does not mean the case is solid 18k gold. A few sellers offer solid 18k replica cases. Those listings cost thousands of dollars, because the metal alone costs that much. The term is not regulated in replica listings, so it has no fixed meaning.
What the term describes
- Gold plating: a thin layer, listed as 2.5 to 5 microns in many ads, over 316L stainless steel or brass. Plating wears at case edges and the caseback.
- Gold filled or gold wrapped: a thicker bonded layer. Federal Jewelry Guides require a gold filled item to hold at least 5 percent gold by weight.
- Solid 18k: 75 percent gold by weight. This is rare in replica listings.
- PVD coating in yellow or rose tone: titanium nitride or a similar compound. No gold content.
Gold math
One troy ounce equals 31.1 grams. Eighteen karat gold is 75 percent gold by weight. Thirty grams of fine gold equals 0.96 troy ounces. At $2,000 per ounce, that metal costs about $1,930. Spot gold has traded above $2,000 per troy ounce since 2020. A solid gold Santos case holds tens of grams of gold. A seller asking $300 for a solid 18k case is not selling solid 18k gold.
Specs that replicas copy
Cartier dates the Santos to 1904. Louis Cartier designed the watch for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. The current Santos de Cartier large model measures about 39.8 mm across the case and 47.5 mm from lug to lug. The medium measures about 35.1 mm across. The Santos-Dumont is a separate and thinner line at about 43.5 mm by 31.4 mm. The current bracelet uses the SmartLink sizing system, and straps attach at the QuickSwitch fitting. Replica makers copy the case shape, the eight bezel screws, and the cabochon crown. Fit and finish show at the screws, the crown stone, and the dial print.
Weight as a check
Replica cases are not solid gold unless a seller states grams and a hallmark. Weight in grams is the fastest rough check. Gold alloy is about twice as dense as steel, so a solid 18k Santos weighs far more than a steel one of the same size.
Movements
Cartier fits its own calibers to the Santos line, including the 1847 MC automatic. Replicas use one of three options: a quartz movement, an automatic from Miyota or Seagull, or a decorated movement built to look like a Cartier caliber. Casebacks on replicas often carry a reference number and serial that match no Cartier record.
Legal status in the United States
Cartier is a trademark of the Richemont group. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Penalties include prison terms and fines. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit shipments. Trademark owners can record their marks with CBP, which makes seizure at the border easier. Buying for personal use and selling are different acts. Reselling an imported counterfeit is trafficking.
What a listing will not state
Plating thickness, the base metal under the plate, the movement source, and the gold content are not stated in a checkable way. An X-ray fluorescence test at a jeweler reads the surface layer. It does not read the core. Ask for a weight in grams and a hallmark photo. If the answer is missing, the 18k claim is unverified.
