What a replica Cartier diamond watch is
A replica Cartier diamond watch copies the outside of a Cartier model. The case shape, dial layout, hands, crown, and stone placement follow the original. The movement inside is a third-party caliber, most often a Swiss ETA-style automatic or a Japanese quartz. Cartier does not make the watch. There is no Richemont serial number and no Cartier service record.
Cartier models that get copied
- Santos de Cartier. Square case, exposed bezel screws, integrated bracelet.
- Ballon Bleu de Cartier. Round case, blue sapphire cabochon set in the crown guard.
- Panthere de Cartier. Rectangular case, flat link bracelet.
- Tank and Tank Francaise. Brancards on both sides, roman numerals on the dial.
- Pasha de Cartier. Round case, screw-down crown cap with a chain.
The Santos and the Ballon Bleu account for most diamond replica sales. Both exist as factory diamond references, so makers have a real design to copy.
Stone types
Cubic zirconia
CZ is the default at low price points. It is hard enough for daily wear, but it clouds and scratches after a few years. Color drifts toward yellow. A 36 mm Santos with a CZ bezel sells for $120 to $250.
Lab-grown diamonds
Lab-grown stones have the same optical and chemical properties as mined diamonds. A 1.0 mm melee stone costs a few dollars. A full pave case and bracelet runs 400 to 1,200 stones. Lab-grown versions sell for $450 to $900.
Natural diamonds
Natural melee is rare in this market. A Cartier factory diamond bezel alone costs more than a complete replica. Sellers who claim VS clarity natural stones at $300 do not have them. Ask for a grading report. If none exists, assume lab-grown or CZ.
Setting types
Bezel set: the stone drops into a drilled hole and metal is pushed over the edge. Pave: small stones sit in a grid held by beads of metal. Channel: stones sit between two metal rails with no visible prongs.
Test each stone with a fingernail. A stone that moves or catches will come out. Check the metal between stones. Thin beads drop stones within months.
Movement and case checks
- Case size: 33 mm, 35 mm, and 38 mm are the common Santos sizes.
- Water resistance: rated 30 m at best. Do not swim with it.
- Movement: Miyota 9015, Seiko NH35, or a claimed ETA 2824 clone.
- Plating: stainless steel with PVD gold, or solid 18k gold on high-end builds.
- Weight: a steel Santos with bracelet runs 100 g to 130 g.
Price bands
- $120 to $250: quartz, CZ stones, 316L steel, PVD finish.
- $250 to $450: automatic, CZ or low-grade lab stones, better bracelet.
- $450 to $900: Swiss or Swiss-clone movement, lab-grown melee, sapphire crystal.
- $900 and up: solid gold case, larger stones, custom setting work.
Before you buy
- Ask for the stone type in writing.
- Ask for a photo of the case back and the movement.
- Ask about the return window. Seven days is the common floor.
- Check the clasp and bracelet screws. Loose screws are the top failure point.
- Confirm shipping terms. US customs can hold the parcel.
