Replica Blancpain dress watches are unauthorized copies of Blancpain's Villeret collection: thin round cases, leather straps, plain dials. Third-party factories make them, in China for the most part. They copy case shape, dial layout, and hand style. They do not use Blancpain movements, and Blancpain does not service or authenticate them.
What the copies target
Blancpain was founded in 1735 in Villeret, Switzerland. The Villeret line is the brand's dress range. Copies track three groups:
- Three-hand ultra-thin models with a date at 3 o'clock.
- Small-seconds models with the sub-dial at 6 o'clock.
- Complete calendar models with day, date, month, and a moonphase at 6 o'clock.
Genuine case sizes in the line run from about 33.5 mm to 40 mm. Most dress references use 18k rose gold, yellow gold, or white gold. Steel versions exist but are fewer. Case height on the ultra-thin references is under 9 mm.
Movements
Genuine Villeret ultra-thin watches use the Calibre 1150 family, an automatic movement about 3.3 mm thick. The 1151 version carries a 100-hour power reserve. The complete calendar uses Calibre 6654, which stacks a calendar and moonphase module under the dial.
Copies use other bases. Common ones are the Seagull ST18 and ST21 families, the Miyota 9015, and Chinese calendar modules added on top of a base movement. A stacked module adds height, so many copies measure 0.5 mm to 2 mm thicker than the reference. Date change points, rotor noise, and winding feel differ from the genuine movement.
Tell points
- Weight. Solid 18k gold cases weigh more than gold-plated brass or steel.
- Thickness. Measure the case with calipers, not by eye.
- Caseback engraving. Genuine engraving has sharper edges and consistent depth.
- Moonphase disc. Genuine discs are lacquered. Many copies use printed film.
- Dial printing. Check the JB 1735 mark and the brand text under a loupe.
- Hands. Genuine hands are polished on all faces.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Importing goods that carry a counterfeit mark is barred by 19 U.S.C. § 1526, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments. Trademark owners can record their marks with CBP to block imports. Buying a replica for personal use is not a federal crime, but the item can be seized at the border and it holds no resale value.
What is not known
Factory names, production volume, and defect rates are not published. Prices differ by market, tier, and seller, and they change. No independent lab publishes accuracy data for these watches.
