Short answer
A two-tone replica Ballon Bleu copies the Cartier Ballon Bleu de Cartier with a steel case and gold accents on the bezel, crown guard, and bracelet center links. Cartier builds the real watch with solid 18k yellow or rose gold. Replicas use gold plating or PVD coating over 316L stainless steel. Prices run from about $60 for a quartz build to $600 for a version with a Swiss movement. Case sizes track the genuine line: 28 mm, 33 mm, 36 mm, 40 mm, and 42 mm.
What two tone means on this model
Cartier released the Ballon Bleu in 2007. The case is a rounded pebble shape with a fluted crown set at 3 o'clock. A blue synthetic spinel cabochon caps the crown. On a two-tone reference, gold covers the bezel, the crown guard, the crown, and the center links of the bracelet. The outer links stay steel.
Yellow gold and rose gold both exist. Rose gold replicas show more color drift. Plating thickness and alloy tone decide how close a replica reads against the genuine watch.
Case sizes
- 28 mm: quartz, women's sizing.
- 33 mm: quartz or automatic, the most common two-tone replica.
- 36 mm: automatic, unisex.
- 40 mm: automatic, date at 3 o'clock.
- 42 mm: automatic, rare in two tone.
Sellers list 33 mm and 36 mm builds most. Measure your wrist before you order. A 36 mm Ballon Bleu wears larger than a 36 mm round dress watch. The case is about 12 mm thick and the lugs curve down.
Movements
Genuine automatic Ballon Bleu watches use Cartier caliber 049, based on the ETA 2892-A2. The 28 mm quartz models use a Cartier quartz module.
Replica movements fall into four groups:
- Quartz: $60 to $120. The second hand ticks.
- Asian clone of the ETA 2824 or 2836: $150 to $280. 28,800 vph, 38 to 40 hour reserve.
- Miyota 9015 or Seagull ST2130: $200 to $350. Better rate and winding feel.
- Swiss ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200: $400 to $600. Same beat rate, parts support.
Check the date change. A 2836 clone flips the date at midnight. A 2824 with a date overlay can lag. Ask the seller for a photo of the movement and the rotor engraving.
Gold plating, PVD, and wrapped claims
Plating thickness is the number that matters.
- 1 to 2 microns: entry tier. Wear shows on the bezel edge and clasp within months.
- 3 to 5 microns: mid tier. Holds color for one to three years with normal wear.
- 10 to 20 microns: sold as gold wrapped or gold filled. Hard to verify.
- PVD titanium nitride: hard coating, orange tint, no gold content.
The genuine bezel is solid 18k gold. No plated replica matches the color under direct light. Wear points are the crown, the bezel edge, the clasp, and the bracelet center link corners.
Checks before you buy
- Cabochon color: dark blue, no bubble inside.
- Caseback text: correct spelling, correct size stamp.
- Date window: aligned, correct font, no gap at the edge.
- Bracelet end links: flush with the case, no gap at the lugs.
- Clasp: Cartier stamp, no rough edges, two push buttons.
- Weight: the replica weighs near the steel version. The genuine two-tone carries more mass from the gold bezel and links.
Legal status in the US
Ballon Bleu is a registered Cartier trademark. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches under 19 U.S.C. 1526. A dial marked Swiss Made needs at least 60 percent of production costs in Switzerland under Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry rules. A Chinese case with a Swiss movement does not meet that test.
