Short answer
A fake Vacheron Constantin 222 fails on four points: the case back stamps, the crown profile, the bracelet join, and the movement. The bracelet is integrated into the case, with no separate end links. Original production ran from 1977 to about 1985. Vacheron Constantin reissued the model in 2022 in 18k yellow gold at 37 mm.
Reference numbers
Original references begin with 222. The steel version is catalogued as reference 22201. Gold and two-tone versions carry other 222xx numbers. The 2022 reissue uses the 4200H format. On older pieces the digits are stamped into the metal, and the line of numbers sits on one baseline. Fakes use shallow laser etching with uneven spacing.
Case, crown, and bracelet
The crown sits inside a recess on the right case flank. Counterfeits use a round crown that protrudes. The bracelet meets the case with a straight seam. A gap at that seam points to a fake. Center links are polished; outer links are brushed. The clasp carries the maker's mark and a matching reference stamp.
Dial
The dial has applied baton indexes, faceted hands, a date aperture at 3 o'clock, and a Maltese cross at 12 o'clock. The cross is a separate metal part on a real watch. Fakes print it. Text reads VACHERON CONSTANTIN with GENEVE below. Check the space between the two words, the print weight, and the date frame under magnification.
Movement
The original 222 used calibre 1120, a thin automatic developed from the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920. The 2022 reissue uses calibre 2455/2. Both carry the Hallmark of Geneva. A photo of the movement is the deciding evidence. Fake movements are common automatic calibres with a logo stamped on the rotor. Bridges, bevels, and engraving do not match on those.
About the number 97415
97415 is not a Vacheron Constantin reference. The 222 line uses references that start with 222, and the 2022 reissue uses 4200. Long digit strings in search results come from listing IDs, forum post numbers, or image file names. Do not use that number to verify a watch. Ask for the reference stamped on the case back.
Price
Auction results for the steel 222 are public. Christie's and Sotheby's list them with photographs and final prices. A 222 offered far below those results is a fake or a misdescribed watch. The same rule applies to the 2022 gold reissue.
