Nail those and a clone reads as convincing from across a table. Miss the weight and the clasp and anyone who handles watches will know in ten seconds.

What the genuine 1908 actually is

Rolex introduced the Perpetual 1908 in 2023 as the replacement for the Cellini line. It is a 39 mm round case in 18k yellow gold, 18k white gold, or platinum, matched to an alligator leather strap and a gold folding Dualclasp. The dial carries applied Arabic numerals at 3, 9, and 12, a small seconds subdial at 6, and the signature hour hand with an open circle near the tip. Platinum versions get an ice blue dial, which is standard practice for Rolex platinum.

Inside sits calibre 7140: automatic, 66 hours of power reserve, Syloxi hairspring, Chronergy escapement, and Superlative Chronometer certification at minus two to plus two seconds a day. Weight is still the giveaway. Gold and platinum are dense, and a steel case with plating cannot fake that in the hand.

Where 1908 replicas fall apart

  • The subdial. On the real watch it sits at 6 with a clean recessed track. On most clones it sits a millimeter high or low, and the hand is too long or too short.
  • The numerals. Applied gold indices have crisp beveled edges. Replicas have soft, rounded edges and uneven spacing between 9 and 12.

  • Real photos of the actual watch, not catalog renders, with something showing scale next to it.
  • A short video of the seconds hand sweeping so you can see whether the subdial is genuinely driven.
  • Confirmed case diameter of 39 mm and lug width of 20 mm.
  • Movement name, and whether the caseback opens for service.
  • Strap material stated plainly, and whether a spare is included.
  • A written return window. No returns means no deal.

When it arrives

Measure the case with calipers if you have them. Wind it and feel for grit. Check that the crown screws down without crunch and that the subdial hand resets to the same spot every time you pull the crown. Look at the lugs under a lamp for plating wear. Run it for a week and note the daily rate. If any of that fails, use the return window instead of living with it.

The part people skip

Selling a replica as a genuine Rolex is fraud, and counterfeit shipments get seized at the US border. Rolex will not service a fake, and no authorized dealer will touch it.
