What the term means

Fake pilots automatic 40 describes replica flieger watches with an automatic movement and a 40 mm case. The originals are pilot watches: black dial, large Arabic numerals, baton or sword hands, and a thick case built for legibility in a cockpit. Two models set the pattern. IWC builds the Mark XVIII and the Mark XX at 40 mm. Stowa builds the Flieger Classic 40 at 40 mm. Replica listings copy those spec sheets.

Which originals get copied

  • IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII: 40 mm case, caliber 35111, 42-hour power reserve.
  • IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XX: 40 mm case, caliber 32111, 120-hour power reserve.
  • Stowa Flieger Classic 40: 40 mm case, Sellita SW200-1 or ETA 2824-2.
  • Laco Aachen and Augsburg: 39 mm case, Miyota 821A, 42-hour power reserve.

Replica case height runs 10.5 mm to 11.5 mm. Lug width is 20 mm on most 40 mm pilots. The Mark XVIII and Mark XX both use 20 mm straps.

Movements inside the replicas

  • Miyota 9015: 24 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, about 42 hours of reserve. Built by Miyota in Japan.
  • Sea-Gull ST2130: 28,800 vibrations per hour, about 40 hours of reserve. Built in Tianjin, China. A copy of the ETA 2824-2 layout.
  • ETA 2892 clone: 21 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour. Quality shifts from batch to batch.

A new 40 mm pilot watch with a Miyota 9015 runs within about -10 to +30 seconds a day. That is the factory tolerance, not a promise for each sample. A watchmaker can regulate the rate for a fee.

Fit on the wrist

Lug-to-lug on a 40 mm flieger measures 47 mm to 49 mm. That span fits wrists from about 6.5 inches to 7.5 inches. A 40 mm case with 20 mm lugs sits smaller than a 43 mm pilot on the same wrist. Buyers with wrists under 6.5 inches often find the lugs overhang.

Crystal, lume, and crown

Originals use sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on both faces. Replicas list sapphire, mineral glass, or coated mineral, and the listing does not always match the shipped part. Originals use Super-LumiNova on the hands and numerals. Replica lume brightness varies by factory and fades faster. Flieger crowns are onion-shaped or flat and signed on the originals. Unsigned crowns appear on lower-tier replicas.

Legal status in the United States

Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. Importing a counterfeit watch violates 19 U.S.C. 1526 and 15 U.S.C. 1124. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize the parcel and destroy the goods. The buyer receives a seizure notice, not the watch. Money paid to the seller is not refunded by any agency. A charge for personal possession is rare; the shipment still does not clear customs.

Checks before you compare listings

  1. Read the spec table, not the headline. Many listings titled 40 mm show 41 mm or 42 mm in the table.
  2. Ask for the caliber number. Swiss automatic with no number is not a spec.
  3. Check the caseback text. Originals engrave the reference number and movement caliber.
  4. Compare the price against the parts list. Sapphire, a Swiss movement, and a 316L case do not add up to $120.
  5. Confirm the lug width and strap size before ordering. A 40 mm case with 21 mm lugs needs a 21 mm strap.

What the guides do not settle

No listing photo proves the movement inside. No seller states the factory name in writing. Case size, lug width, and caliber number are the only figures a buyer can verify before payment. Everything else rests on the seller's word.
