Short answer
A. Lange & Söhne does not list a watch called Nocturne. The Glashütte catalog holds the Lange 1, Saxonia, Zeitwerk, Odysseus, Datograph, Richard Lange and 1815 families. Nocturne is not among them. Sellers use the name for replica listings that copy dark-dial Lange watches. The Lange 1 Moon Phase fits most of those listings.
Treat "Lange Nocturne" as a seller label, not a reference number. A real Lange reference carries six digits. The Lange 1 Moon Phase in yellow gold is reference 192.032.
What the listings show
Replica pages that use the Nocturne name share a set of specs:
- Case width of 38 mm to 41 mm. The Lange 1 Moon Phase measures 38.5 mm. The Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase measures 41 mm.
- An offset main dial at the left, a small seconds subdial at 4 o'clock, an outsize date at the top right, and a power reserve scale at 3 o'clock.
- A moon phase display inside the seconds subdial. Lange pairs the moon disc with a day and night disc.
- A sapphire caseback with a view of the movement.
Where fakes fail
- Moon phase. The genuine Lange 1 Moon Phase needs one correction every 122.6 years. Replica discs run a fixed cycle near 29.5 days and ignore the 29.53-day synodic month, so the moon drifts out of step.
- Movement. Genuine Lange 1 Moon Phase watches use a hand-wound in-house calibre with a 72-hour power reserve. Most replicas use a Chinese automatic movement with a rotor. That rotor sits under the caseback where a Lange movement has none.
- Finish. Lange movements show Glashütte ribbing on the bridges, gold chatons, blued screws and a hand-engraved balance cock. Replica plates are stamped or laser etched. The engraving pattern repeats from watch to watch.
- Outsize date. Two separate date discs jump at midnight on a genuine watch. Fakes use a printed disc or a slow roll, and the jump lands before or after midnight.
- Case height. Genuine Lange 1 cases run near 10 mm thick. Many fakes add 2 mm or more to fit the movement.
- Power reserve hand. The Auf and Ab scale shows the state of the mainspring on a real watch. On a fake with an automatic movement the hand does not move.
Price bands
Genuine Lange 1 Moon Phase watches sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Metal, condition, box and papers drive the number. Replica listings for Lange models sit between about $150 and $900. Sellers above that range claim Swiss parts or "super clone" status. No public record shows A. Lange & Söhne selling movements, ebauches or parts to outside parties.
Checks before you pay
- Ask for the six-digit reference and match it to the brand catalog.
- Ask for a photo of the movement through the caseback, then compare the layout with a photo from the brand or an auction house.
- Ask for a video of the date jump at midnight.
- Ask for caliper photos of case thickness and lug width.
- Inspect the balance cock engraving. Hand cut work varies. Stamped copies do not.
- Ask about the moon disc: gold moon on a dark blue field, plus a day and night disc.
Legal and service notes
US law covers trafficking in counterfeit goods under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments of fake watches. A. Lange & Söhne will not service a counterfeit, and parts for a fake come from the same sellers who built it. Independent watchmakers face part shortages on replica movements.
Unknowns
No brand catalog, auction record or press release shows a Lange model named Nocturne. If a seller uses the name, ask for the reference. A seller who cannot name one is selling a label, not a copy of a catalogued watch.
