How do you tell if an IW371410 is fake?
A fake IW371410 fails at least one of five checks: case thickness, dial layout, movement finish, caseback engraving, or paperwork. The genuine watch is the IWC Portugieser Chronograph, a 40.9 mm steel chronograph with a 12 and 6 subdial layout, no date window, and IWC caliber 79350 inside.
Run those checks in order. Cheap replicas fail the first two, and even a high end "super clone" IW371410 fails the last three under a loupe or a timing machine.
What does a genuine IW371410 look like?
The reference sits inside the Portugieser Chronograph family. Expect a 40.9 mm stainless steel case about 12 mm thick, sapphire crystal front and back on most examples, a 30 minute chronograph counter at 12 o'clock, small running seconds at 6, and leaf shaped hands over applied numerals.
Inside is IWC caliber 79350, a Valjoux 7750 base reworked in Schaffhausen to run at 28,800 vph with roughly 44 hours of power reserve. Water resistance is rated to 3 bar, and the strap is normally Santoni leather on a signed folding clasp.
Fake IW371410: quick checklist
- Case: measure thickness and lug profile. Most replicas add 1 to 2 mm and feel top heavy on the wrist.
- Dial: subdials must sit at 12 and 6 with no date window at 3 o'clock. A date aperture is the fastest fail.
- Printing: "IWC" and "SCHAFFHAUSEN" should be crisp and evenly spaced, with no fuzzy edges at 10x magnification.
- Hands: leaf hands should be polished and flat, and must point exactly at the markers when the chronograph resets to zero.
- Caseback: reference and serial numbers must be deep cut, centered, and consistent with the paperwork.
- Movement: look for IWC engraving, perlage and a signed rotor. A raw, undecorated 7750 is a replica.
- Pushers: genuine chronograph pushers have firm, short travel. Mushy or gritty pushers point to a copy.
- Price: a genuine steel IW371410 trades in the high four figures used. A few hundred dollars means fake.
Dial and subdial red flags
Replica dials usually get the rail track and subdial spacing slightly wrong, so the hands miss the markers on reset. Subdial hands on copies are often flat stamped metal instead of polished.
Check the crystal as well. Genuine IWC sapphire shows a faint blue anti reflective tint at an angle. Cheap replicas look milky or throw heavy purple reflections.
Caseback, serial and engraving checks
Authentic engraving is cut into the metal with sharp walls and even depth. Laser etched replicas look shallow and grey, and lose detail under magnification.
Match the serial to the reference and to the guarantee card. IWC can confirm a serial through an authorized service center, and any watchmaker with a caseback tool can repeat the check in minutes.
Movement: IWC caliber 79350 vs a clone
Caliber 79350 is a heavily reworked Valjoux 7750. The rotor, bridges and screws carry IWC finishing, and the beat rate is 28,800 vph with about 44 hours of reserve.
Most replicas use a stock or lightly decorated 7750, and some use quartz with a faux rotor. A timing machine will expose the difference in amplitude and rate stability within seconds.
Are super clone IW371410 watches convincing?
High end replicas now copy the 12 and 6 layout, the 40.9 mm case and the display back, so they can survive a five second glance at arm's length. They still fail on engraving depth, movement decoration, crystal tint, crown threading and clasp machining.
If you are buying second hand, ask for movement photos, a video of the chronograph resetting, and the original box and papers. Have the watch verified before money changes hands.
What if you already bought a fake?
Contact the seller in writing, document the serial with photos, and dispute the payment through your card issuer or platform. Authorized IWC service centers will not service or authenticate counterfeit watches, so use an independent watchmaker for a written opinion.
