Short answer
A fake Cartier Astrotourbillon platinum is a counterfeit of the Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon, a 47 mm platinum watch Cartier introduced in 2010. The genuine watch runs caliber 9451 MC, a hand wound movement with a flying tourbillon whose carriage travels around the dial once per minute. No counterfeit on the market copies that mechanism. Replica versions use an automatic movement under a decorative plate and a separate rotating cage driven by its own gear. Three checks separate the two: weight, hallmarks, and the path of the carriage.
What the genuine watch is
- Model: Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon, first shown 2010.
- Movement: caliber 9451 MC, hand wound, tourbillon carriage offset from the dial center, one rotation per minute.
- Case: 47 mm, platinum 950, sapphire crystal front and back.
- Strap: alligator leather with a platinum folding clasp on the platinum references.
- Later versions: Astrotourbillon Carbon Crystal (2012), Astrotourbillon Skeleton (2015).
Cartier built the carriage so the balance wheel travels with it. The pivot sits at the center of the dial, and the cage sweeps a circle across the face. This differs from a standard tourbillon, which stays in one spot at 6 o'clock.
Check one: weight
Platinum 950 has a density near 21.4 g/cm3. Stainless steel sits near 7.9, and 18k white gold near 15. Most replica cases use steel or a tungsten alloy. A 47 mm platinum case with a platinum clasp feels heavy in the hand, and the mass sits low. A steel fake of the same size feels light. Tungsten alloys come closer in weight, so weight alone does not settle the question.
Check two: hallmarks and caseback
Swiss law requires a hallmark for platinum. The mark is a dog's head, the St. Bernard. Genuine platinum Cartier cases carry the maker's mark, the fineness stamp Pt950, and the Swiss hallmark. Replica casebacks show laser engraving that is shallow and uniform. The genuine engraving is cut deeper. Reference and serial numbers on a genuine case sit in a straight line and match the paperwork. Fakes often repeat the same serial across batches.
Check three: the tourbillon
On the genuine caliber 9451 MC, the carriage, the balance wheel, and the escapement move as one unit around the dial center. Watch the cage for 60 seconds. It makes one full pass. In replica versions with a mock carriage, the cage turns but the balance staff stays fixed, or the cage and the balance rotate at different rates. Look through the display back. A real hand wound Astrotourbillon shows one mainspring barrel and a winding stem with no rotor. A replica shows an automatic weight or a rotor hidden under a plate.
What the fakes contain
Common replica builds use a 21,600 vph automatic movement, a printed or plated bridge, and a screw set added to look like jeweled pivots. Sapphire is often mineral glass. The strap is embossed calf leather. Threading and edge paint on the strap are uneven. The clasp is steel with a laser mark, not platinum.
Legal status in the United States
Counterfeit watches with a Cartier trademark are illegal to sell or import in the US under 18 U.S.C. 2320 and 19 U.S.C. 1526. Customs can seize shipments. Buyers face no criminal charge for personal possession in most cases, but resale is a federal offense.
Open points
Cartier does not publish production totals for the platinum Astrotourbillon. Secondary market prices move with condition, box, and papers. I could not verify a single official reference number for every platinum variant, so check the caseback against Cartier service records before you rely on a number.
