A genuine steel 16202 measures 8.1 mm thick and runs the in-house caliber 7121. Copies sold as super clones or 1:1 replicas miss on three points: case thickness, dial texture, and movement finish. A counterfeit watch sold as a real AP adds a fourth problem: forged papers and a forged serial number.

Dial checks
The Petite Tapisserie squares are cut, not printed. Under a 10x loupe the grid walls are straight and the tops are flat. Copy dials show rounded walls, uneven spacing, and a soft date window. The date font on the genuine watch is thin, and the disc sits at the center of the window. Many replicas use a font with thick strokes and a disc that sits low in the frame.
The applied AUDEMARS PIGUET signature is the second marker. Genuine text has clean edges at 10x. Copy text shows bleed and a shallow relief.
Case and bracelet checks
Measure the case with calipers. This is the fastest test. The 16202 is 8.1 mm thick. Most replicas land between 8.6 mm and 10 mm because the clone movement sits deeper in the case. A 0.5 mm gap is visible on the wrist.
Check the bezel screws. Genuine screws sit in line with the case edge, with a flat slot. Copy screws sit at odd angles or sit proud of the bezel. Check the link edges on the bracelet: hand chamfers on the genuine piece, flat or rounded edges on copies. Check the clasp engraving depth and the crown logo relief.
Movement checks
Open the caseback. Caliber 7121 has bridges with Cotes de Geneve, polished bevels, and circular graining on the mainplate. Clone movements, often built on a Miyota 9015 base or a Chinese copy, show laser-cut bevels, no hand polish, and shallow rotor engraving.
Beat rate: 28,800 vph is 8 beats per second. A 21,600 vph movement is 6 beats per second. Some copies run the lower rate. Listen or use a timegrapher.
Papers, serials, and price
List price at launch in 2022 was in the low $30,000s for steel. Secondary market prices ran higher. The serial number is engraved on the caseback and matches the warranty card and the AP service record. AP confirms a watch during service. A seller who refuses a service check is a signal. A price far below market is a second signal.
What a replica can and cannot match
Top tier replicas copy the case shape, dial layout, and bracelet well enough at arm's length. They do not match the movement. The 7121 is 4.31 mm thick with hand-finished bridges. No clone sold at replica prices reproduces that finish. Weight is a second gap. Gold versions are the easiest to fake on paper and the hardest to fake on the scale, because case weight is fixed by metal density.
